Jon took a First in Law from Jesus College Cambridge and was called to the Bar by the Inner Temple in 2000. He was a pupil and tenant at 5 Paper Buildings, Temple and quickly developed a sophisticated practice prosecuting and defending serious crime, especially fraud, becoming Research Co-ordinator for 5 Paper Buildings´ Fraud and Corporate Crime practice group. His notable cases include:
R v Hauxwell Smith and others, Birmingham Crown Court, successfully appeared for the defendant in a category 1 Serious Fraud Office prosecution regarding an alleged £15million fraud against IKEA, resulting in acquittals on all counts faced.
R v H [2007] 2 WLR 364; [2007] UKHL 7, appeared for the Appellant in an appeal to the House of Lords in relation to the scope of serious fraud preparatory hearings under sections 7 and 9 of the Criminal Justice Act 1987; the leading authority on interlocutory criminal appeals in serious or complex cases.
R v Bisla & others, Central Criminal Court, January 2004 to March 2004, appeared for the defendant in the Southall Broadway murder trial resulting in acquittal
R v Khan, Aziz & Riaz, Southwark Crown Court, October 2003 to January 2004, appeared for the prosecution in a £1m telecommunications fraud
Jon has defended Courts - Martial at first instance and appellate level, including appearing for the 1st defendant in the high profile court-martial of four British soldiers in relation to the abuse of Iraqi prisoners in the Bread Basket camp, Basra, Southern Iraq (R v Bartlam (Gary) [2005] EWCA Crim 1801).
Jon is a member of the Criminal Bar Association, the South Eastern Circuit and the Wales & Chester Circuit. His interests are Football, Rugby Union, and Climbing/Mountaineering and he is a member of the British Mountaineering Council Cymru/Wales Area Committee.
