OVERVIEW

Hywel was called to the bar in 2017 and joined Apex Chambers in 2023. Prior to commencing pupillage Hywel read Law at Aberystwyth University before completing the Bar Professional Training Course at Cardiff University where he was graded ‘Very Competent’. 

 

Hywel has built a practice predominately consisting of criminal defence work. He has experience representing defendants charged with a wide range of offences including: s.18 grievous bodily harm and sexual assault of a child under 13, through to large scale supply of Class A drugs, Fraud and Conspiracy offences.  

Since joining chambers, Hywel has begun prosecuting cases in the Crown Court and is developing this aspect of his practice. 

Hywel also has experience defending in other areas of the law, including Appeals against the Home Office in Immigration and Asylum matters and Court Marshalls at Bulford Military Court, Salisbury. 

 

NOTABLE CASES

R v G and others– Defended one of 9 defendants charged with large scale conspiracy to defraud. This trial lasting 5 weeks.  

R v J and other – Defended one of 7 defendants charged with conspiracy to burgle over 140 homes in a 3-month period. This trial lasting 4 weeks. 

R v P and others – Defended in a large scale conspiracy to supply hundreds of thousands of pounds of Class A drugs to the Swansea area. 

R v LL – Defended a client charged with serious sexual offences who used controlled drugs to facilitate the abuse over the course of months. The defendant was the grandfather of the complainant.  

R v W – Defended a client charged with the supply of 8 ½ kilograms of heroin in the Swansea area over a 2 year period. 

R v N – Defended a client charged with the production of hundreds of thousands of pounds of cannabis plants. 

R v S and others – Defended a client charged with county lines supply of controlled drugs, kidnap, serious violence and possession of a bladed article. 

R v S and others – Defended a youth charged with Aggravated burglary, Supply of controlled drugs and other serious violence.
