OVERVIEW

Nick read law at Cambridge, graduating in 1990, and had a career as an opera and concert singer before being called to the Bar in 2000.

He prosecutes and defends a wide range of criminal cases and has also appeared in professional disciplinary cases and inquests.

CRIME

​

Significant cases include; R v F and R v P – defence counsel in major South Wales class A drug conspiracies (Operations Washington and Vermont). R v C – defence counsel in double section18 involving use of car as weapon. R v M – counsel for youth in case of extremely serious sexual allegations against a young child. Operation Jasmine – counsel for GP accused of fraud and offences concerned with cremation certification in major case homes case. R v S – counsel for GP accused of sexually assaulting two patients. R v D – counsel for dental hygienist accused of sexually assault a patient. R v H – counsel for GP in prescription fraud. Operation Cannister – junior prosecution counsel in major mobile phone insurance fraud. Operations Rebus and Texas– junior prosecution counsel in major South Wales / Midlands / Merseyside class A drug conspiracies. Operation Washer – junior prosecution counsel in nationwide +£1m car ringing conspiracy. 

 


DISCIPLINARY LAW
 

Nick has represented medical professionals at the GMC, GDC, General Council of Chiropractors and the Health Professions Council. He has also represented police officers in disciplinary proceedings. Cases include; GMC v Dr A – counsel for consultant physician re allegations of the dishonest misappropriation of and unauthorised publication of clinical and academic research. GMC v R & R – counsel for consultant and GP in case concerning misconduct in the management of a care home. GMC v B –counsel for hospital doctor re allegations of dishonesty in the obtaining of and sending overseas of medication. Re Sgt M – counsel for custody sergeant in case of a death in custody. Re PC F – counsel for officer in case of gross misconduct which attracted international media attention. 


INQUESTS
 

Nick has represented health professionals, health trusts and police officers in inquests. He has been involved in a number of high profile cases of deaths in custody. Cases include; Re G – counsel for prison doctor in 5 week inquest into death from dehydration of a prisoner at HMP Blakenhurst. Re B – counsel for prison doctor in inquest into death by hanging of a prisoner at HMP Bristol. Re B – counsel for prison doctor in inquest into death by hanging of a prisoner at HMP Brockhill. Re H – counsel for health trust in inquest into death by hanging of a prisoner at HMP Stafford. Re B –counsel for police doctor in inquest into death in custody of mental health detainee following restraint. Re H – counsel for health trust re death on a supervised home visit of a psychiatric patient. Re S – counsel for Custody Sergeant in death in custody case.
